Social Network Analysis for Online Discussion : Number of Links vs. Sum of Weight
XMLThe purpose of this study is to compare the use of number of links
and sum of weight for measuring the level of participations among
students in online discussion. Usually, SNA determines the level
of participation in asynchronous online discussions based on
number of links. However, it is not fair for participants who send
or post a message more than once. The effectiveness of these two
approaches are measured and then statistically compared based on
social network indicators; degree, degree centrality, density and
network degree centralization. The result shows that sum of
weight is more appropriate, reliable and objective than number of
links to measure the level of participation among students in
online discussion.
